PIEPS DSP PRO official promo

An official promo video about the two receivers PIEPS DSP PRO and DSP SPORT. Very briefly about their functionality.
Ryan Guess, a representative of the company 'Black Diamond', tells about the PIEPS DSP SPORT and DSP PRO transceivers. You will see a brief overview of the transceivers’ design and learn about the main functions, as well as about the exclusive features. It is very briefly.

PIEPS DSP PRO official info

  • Extensive self-check. Review of all relevant hardware and software elements as well as showing the current software version.
  • Perfectly readable display in all lighting conditions
  • Auto-antenna-switch. If the transmitting antenna experiences a fault due to electronic devices or metal interference, it automatically switches to the other antenna.
  • Auto-search-to-send. This function automatically switches the PIEPS DSP PRO from search mode to transmit mode, if the beacon is not moving for a certain time (in case of burial).
  • iProbe support. The PIEPS DSP PRO can be temporarily deactivated using the smart iPROBE. The receiving beacon automatically receives the next strongest signal.
  • Group check. Reviews the activity and transmission parameters of the partner device. PIEPS recommends to perform a group check before each tour.
  • Scan-function. The SCAN-function will give you an overview of all buried devices within the detectable range.
  • Frequwncy measurment. The frequency of all other beacons can be checked. The deviation from the standardized frequency 457 kHz is indicated.
  • TX600 support. The PIEPS TX600 is a mini-transmitter for dogs and equipment that is transmitting out of the standard EN300718 and can be received with every PIEPS DSP PRO.
  • Inclinometer. With the integrated three dimensional inclinometer the the punctual angle of the slope can be measured.
  • Carrying system PIEPS DSP PRO. High wearing comfort at low weight. Neoprene pouch with soft shoulder strap. Quick-Pull-System for fast access to the device.
  • Maximum range (m): 60
  • Search strip width (m): 60
  • Dimensions (mm, LxWxH): 115 x 75 x 28
  • Weight (g, incl. batteries): 225
  • Power supply: 3 batteries (AAA)
  • Battery lifetime (min. h) : 400
  • Transmission frequency (kHz, according to EN300718): 457
  • Temperature range: -20°C to +45°C

PIEPS DSP PRO community reviews

A representative of 'Backcountry Skiing Canada' tells about the PIEPS DSP PRO transceiver. Brad demonstrates the design of this transceiver, briefly compares with the predecessor. He also talks about how to measure the angle of the slope, to switch between modes, how to use the scanning function. And you will learn about the 'Auto-antenna-switch' function, and about how does marking work in a multi-burial scenario.
The main advantages of the PIEPS DSP PRO in the opinion of 'Backcountry Skiing Canada' are:
  • the built-in inclinometer, which is not found in the other transceivers else;
  • The big range radius of reception-transmission of a digital signal (60m - about 197 ft.);
  • a low cost compared to the predecessor;
  • the scanning function, which is undoubtedly very useful in planning any search operation;
  • a system of quickly retrieving device from the bag on the body.
However, they consider that this device has some cons, as a short and non-elastic strap for attaching the transceiver to the breast pocket, though it has a carabiner clasp (it would be more convenient to make a usual stretchable strap); switching between the operational modes maybe not very easy with gloves. А polarizing glass of the sun-protective mask can make it more difficult the reading of the information with the display; it is tactile impossible to determine the change of the modes by the slider, you can easily slip by the transfer mode immediately to the search mode, and the 'Backcountry Skiing Canada' guys did not like the three-sectors imaging of the battery charge − it's more convenient to navigate with a percentage value.
The specialists of 'BeaconReviews' also referred the next to the advantages: scanning function, testing of the frequency of the received signal, life of the battery, presence of the scanner, an integrated inclinometer and a big range radius of reception/transmission of the signal, low cost, ease of using, a good fastening system and ease of use in the gloves. According to the site 'BeaconReviews.com' this transceiver has no shortcomings.
Separately it would be desirable to note that auto-switching from the search to the transfer mode (in the case of the second avalanche) is configured only in the specialized service centers. The transceiver recounts the transition to the transmission mode if the motion stops, so the probability of an erroneous auto-switching is minimal.
Another video is about the PIEPS DSP PRO, which also describes the operation of this device in the case of multiple burials. Here it can be seen how the transceiver behaves in the active connection to the signal source (closer than about 6.6 ft.), and also how the analog transmitters display the victims. Also, a work of the beeper in the group check mode is demonstrated in this video.
